FIRST® LEGO® League is Washington State’s most comprehensive hands-on robotics program. Teams of youth ages 9 through 14 tackle real-world challenges and explore potential careers by building LEGO®-based robots. They brainstorm, tinker, solve problems, build, and compete using their creations.
By approaching robotics as a team sport, not a classroom subject, we make learning fun and ignite a passion for discovery and creativity. That’s how FIRST® LEGO® League is preparing youth to be leaders in the STEM careers of tomorrow.
FIRST® LEGO®® League teams are formed in schools or other youth-based organizations such as scouts or 4H Clubs. Adults organize and mentor the students, but the students make the decisions and do all the work. They build amazing robots, learn to cooperate professionally and graciously, and have fun competing with teams from all over the state. It’s the best way we know to prepare students for the lightning-speed technology shifts of tomorrow’s complex world.
Volunteers and teachers are the lifeblood of the program – they make it happen. Whatever your role, FIRST® LEGO® League will support you all the way, with easy-to-use online toolkits, in-person training sessions, online communities, and webinars to give you the answers you need.
We connect you with resources – industry partners, financial support, hands-on help – whatever it takes for you to succeed.
Each August, we provide teams around the world with an annual Challenge posted on FIRSTLEGOLeague.org. The Challenge is based on a set of real-world problems facing scientists and engineers today. The Challenge has two parts: the Robot Game and the Project.
Robot Game: Teams design, build, program, and test autonomous robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology. The robots perform a series of missions during 2½-minute matches.
Project: Teams research a real-world problem and create an innovative solution using their skills and teamwork. Teams share their findings with others.
What Is FIRST® WASHINGTON
FIRST® Washington is an organization that inspires youth by immersing them in robotics as a team sport. Our hands-on approach and lively competitions ignite passion, encouraging discovery and creativity. Young people across Washington State have fun as they learn to be the science and technology leaders of tomorrow.
We offer four levels of programs to excite young people from kindergarten through high school about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We welcome youth and volunteers from all backgrounds and abilities, and work hard to deliberately engage girls and diverse populations to ensure equal access for all to STEM education.
FIRST® Washington is a national leader in robotics competitions. Our supportive environment for students, teachers, and volunteers at every level, has made FIRST® Washington the largest and most comprehensive robotics program in the state.
The FIRST® MISSION
FIRST® Washington is the regional partner of FIRST®, a national organization dedicated to inspiring all young people to be science and technology leaders. FIRST® engages them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, technology, and engineering skills. FIRST® inspires innovation and fosters well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
